چکیده

The integration of sedimentological and structural data in the western end of the Ripoll syncline allows a clearer understanding of the palaeogeography of the area between the oblique termination of the Pedraforca thrust sheet and the frontal Vallfogona thrust during middle Eocene times. In this region, a 2.5-km thick clastic succession corresponding to the Bellmunt and Milany sequences infilled the Ripoll syncline. This succession evolved from fluvio-deltaic to alluvial. The long-lived and west prograding longitudinal fluvio-deltaic system was parallel to the axis of the syncline. The fluvio-deltaic deposits are found interfingered with others, which correspond to transverse alluvial fans of northern provenance, which are increasingly important towards the top of the section. The persistent and uniform WSW palaeoflow direction of the fluvio-deltaic system together with the position of open marine conditions to the south indicate that the southern boundary of the system was constrained by a tectonic barrier which is attributed to the emergence of the Vallfogona thrust. The ramp of this thrust above the foreland basin strata formed the Ripoll piggyback basin from middle Lutetian times on, several millions years earlier than previously proposed. The western end of the Ripoll syncline is thus an example of a complex partitioning of a foreland basin over time and space by structures of differing growth duration and different trend. The interaction of the oblique system of thrusts, corresponding to the eastern termination of the Pedraforca thrust sheet and the Vilada anticline, and the frontal system of the Vallfogona thrust controlled the position of the Bellmunt river-dominated delta, which acted as the outlet of the Ripoll piggyback basin. Determination of Tectonic Activity Based on the Morphology of Alluvial Fan Systems (Case Study: the Northern Slopes of Sabalan Volcanic Mount)

Aims & Backgrounds: Alluvial fans are one of the most prominent phenomena in fluvial geomorphology, which are found mostly on the mountain front. These landforms are affected by climate change and tectonic activity and record their effects. Therefore, we can use them to understand climate change and tectonic activities. The aim of this study was to determine the tectonic activity in the northe...

بررسی تأثیر ویژگی‌های هندسی حوضه‌ها در تشکیل مخروط‌افکنه‌های دامنه جنوبی البرز در استان سمنان با استفاده از روش‌های همبستگی و تحلیل سلسله مراتبی

Introduction Alluvial fans are considered as one of the arid and semi-arid geomorphic effects, which are the result of intense flow water performance in the past and present. Therefore, alluvial fans can be considered as legacies of quaternary climate. Dryv (1873) used alluvial fan terminology for the first time. The US geographical organization conducted a study focusing on alluvial fans in...

Quaternary cone forming model using sedimentary and geophysical (geoelectric) data in the southeast of Yazd city, Central Iran

Abstract: Alluvial fan are one of the most dynamic Quaternary landforms in arid areas. An alluvial fan in the southeast of the city Yazd was identified based on satellite images; in this research, the primary objective of this study is to investigate the surface and subsurface sedimentology of alluvial fan flasks. Twenty soil samples were taken for sedimentological studies. The result indicate ...

The chronology of the Eocene tectonic and stratigraphie development of the eastern Pyrenean foreland basin, northeast Spain

Abundant and clearly exposed relationships between structures and syntectonic sedimentary rocks in the southern Pyrenees make this area particularly suitable for detailed studies of the sequential development of a collisional orogenic belt. During the Pyrenean orogeny, major shortening occurred in the eastern Pyrenees in Eocene and early Oligocene times. Unto now, individual tectonic and deposi...
